Rotomoulding Applications

When it comes to manufacturing large hollow plastic parts, nothing beats the process of rotomolding. Compared to other molding or casting processes like injection or blow molding, rotomolding is exceptionally cost efficient and the products produced are also of better quality.

Materials Used in Rotomoulding

Rotomoulding is one of the fastest plastic processing methods. It gives enormous flexibility in design and production. This unique process helps in designing the large hollow parts in any sizes, colors, shapes and forms. Several advantages have been noticed in this process, some of which encompasses:
  • Effortless wall thickness corrections
  • Excellent load bearing nature
  • Flexible design parameters
  • Less tooling cost
  • Utilize dual-axis rotation and high temperature to fill the mold
In late years, important improvements have been made in Rotomoulding. As a consequence, the parts which were difficult to fabricate by other processes are now can be easily designed/created using the Rotomoulding process.

The Rotomoulding Process starts from the heating stage, where the mold slowly rotates in bi-axial rotation. This heat transfer result in melting of the plastic, which uniformly coat the interior of the mold. Then, the mold moves to the cooling station, where air or water spray is used for the purpose of cooling. In the last phase, which is the load and unloads stage, the finished piece is taken out of the mold and a fresh rush of material is loaded for further processing.

Rotational molders uses several and different kinds of materials for Rotomoulding Process. The materials come in various densities, which effect on the strength and stiffness on the products. The raw material is categorized in Commonly Used Materials and Natural Materials that are briefed below:

Commonly used Materials
There are various most commonly used raw materials in the process of rotomoulding. Many of them are from Polyethylene family, which includes Cross-linked Polyethylene (PE), Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). In addition to this, some other compounds such as Nylons, PVC Plastisols, and Polypropylene are also used as raw materials sometimes.

Commonly used Materials
Occasionally Used Materials:
Apart from polyethylene materials like LLDPE, HDPE and PE, there are some other specific raw materials which are utilized in rotational moulding industries. A few of them are aluminum, acetal, epoxy, fluorocarbons, polyester, polybutylene, ionomoer, etc.

Occasionally Used
Natural Materials
Apart from commonly used material like HDPE, LDPE and PE, some natural materials are also used in Rotomoulding Process. These materials comprise Real Sand Stone Chips, polyurethane, silicone, etc. which are used to create sandstone composite.
