What is a Gas plant?
Gas Plant is a processing unit that helps in treatment of impure gas that is collected from the gas reserve, in order to make it pure and usable. Gas reserves often call as gas wells are deep below the Earth. Raw gas that is collected from a reserve is contaminated with different types of impurities like unwanted associated gases, oil, water, etc. Due to all these impurities, the collected gases cannot be used directly and hence there is a need for proper treatment. The process of gas purification is carried out in well engineered gas plants. Once, the gas passes through all the levels of processing and is completely purified, it is transferred to the user end through pipelines. Also, the purified gases can be stored in tanks/ pipelines for later shipping.
How it works?
Gas plants use different methods of gas purification, depending on the varied properties of a specific gas. Usually the steps involved in gas purification are similar. The working of a gas plant can be explained in a brief manner, through following points:
- At the first stage, crude gas is released into the gas separation system
- In the gas separation system, gas undergoes various decomposition steps & gradually pressure of the gas minimizes
- Each decomposition step helps in releasing unwanted associates gases one by one
- Almost at the end of this phase, the gas pressure is decreased little above atmospheric pressure
- At the next stage, gas is sent to stabilizer column
- The gas is heated and cascaded in the stabilizer column through molecular sieves
- Then, gas is collected in solid or liquid form at the top of the column
- Heavy impurities get collected at the bottom, from where those are drawn off
- Last stage is to cool the stabilized gas and then store it
A precision engineered gas plant ensures balanced and safe process of gas production. Gas plants come in varied sizes ranging from small to large.
Below mentioned are some of the significant points that should be taken into consideration before setting up a Gas Plant:
- Research for preparing preliminary reports
- Clear & correct drawings and site layouts
- Foundation drawings with accurate calculated measurements
- Selection of Survey Equipments, Technical specifications and Suppliers
- Recruiting skilled & semi-skilled technical manpower, engineers, operators
- Arrangement for proper means of Erecting & Commissioning
- Storing, filling and distribution
- Giving demonstration & proper training to the involved personnel
